How Swimming Pool Sand Filters Work
In general, the operation of a sand filter involves water entering the top of the tank and passing through sand and gravel for purification. As the water moves downward, the sharp edges of the sand trap impurities, dirt, and oils, and thus the water exits clean and clear.

Most sand filters utilize crystalline or glass silica in their tanks. For getting information about silica pricing, click the link provided. The body of HiWater sand filters is made from fiberglass, ensuring high durability to withstand the filtration pressure.

Components of Swimming Pool Sand Filters
Swimming pool sand filters consist of various components, as follows:

Air vent valve
Pipes
Pressure gauge
Connections and valves for inlet and outlet water
Hatch

Types of Swimming Pool Sand Filters
Slow Sand Filters: This type is used for large volumes of water, such as urban water systems. In this filter, water flows through the silica media due to gravity rather than pressure, and thus silica is in contact and proximity with open space.
Fast Sand Filters: In this filter, water is forced through the silica using pump pressure, increasing the water passing speed.
High-Rate Sand Filters: Similar to fast sand filters, these filters differ only in the size of the silica. They possess larger silica grains, enabling water to pass through more quickly under greater pressure.

Cartridge Filters for Pools
Pool filters have different types, one of which is the cartridge filter, which is suitable for removing particles sized between 10 to 15 microns.

Backwashing Sand Filters for Pools
Over time, as pool sand filters are used, impurities accumulate on the surface of the silica, requiring cleaning. This cleaning process is known as backwashing which works in the opposite manner to the standard operation of a sand filter (In a sand filter, water flows in from the top, passes through the silica layers, and exits through the lower part of the system.) The steps for performing a backwash are outlined below:

Turn off the pool pump that circulates the pool water.
Close the valve for the water entering the top of the filter, open the outlet valve leading to the pool, and open the pool water valve toward the bottom of the filter and the filter valve toward the sewage system.
Restart the filtration pump.
Continue the process until the water exiting the filter is clean, then turn off the pump.
Close the pool water inlet valve at the top of the filter and open the filter’s drainage valve.
Let the pump operate for approximately 30 to 90 minutes.
Shut off the pump and return all valves to their original positions.
Restart the pump.

Note: In regions with water scarcity, air is used instead of water for backwashing. In these cases, a blower replaces the pool pump to circulate the air.

When to Replace Sand Filter Silica
Over time and after prolonged use of the sand filter, the silica loses its effectiveness and can no longer filter impurities efficiently. Therefore, the silica must be replaced. Silica is not only used in sand filters but also in foundries and the glass industry.

Proper maintenance of sand filters can extend the life of silica. On average, silica should be replaced every five years, with regular cleaning during this period.
